Wooden Toy Care Guide
Caring for Your Wooden Toys
Our toys are handcrafted from solid hardwoods — including beech, walnut, birch, maple, oak, linden, ash, and alder — and finished with materials such as linseed oil, water-based stains, and child-safe colours. With a little gentle care, they are built to be loved for years and passed down to the next generation.
Everyday Cleaning
Wipe wooden pieces with a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately with a dry cloth. Do not soak, submerge, or run wooden toys under water — prolonged moisture can cause wood to swell, crack, or warp. Avoid household cleaning sprays, bleach, or alcohol-based products, which can damage the wood or its finish. For stubborn spots, a cloth lightly moistened with water is usually enough.
Drying
After any cleaning, allow the toy to air-dry completely in a well-ventilated area before storing or returning it to play. Never dry wooden toys in direct sunlight, on a radiator, or near a heat source — rapid drying can cause cracking or splitting.
Sunlight & Heat
Keep wooden toys out of direct sunlight for extended periods. UV exposure can fade natural wood tones and water-based colours over time. Similarly, avoid storing toys in very hot or very cold spaces (such as a car boot or unheated garage), as extreme temperature changes can cause the wood to expand, contract, or crack.
Surface Scratches
Light surface scratches on unfinished or oil-finished pieces (such as those finished with linseed oil) can often be smoothed away gently with fine-grit sandpaper, followed by a light application of food-grade linseed oil rubbed in with a soft cloth. Allow the oil to absorb fully and wipe away any excess before use. For painted or stained pieces, we do not recommend sanding, as this may remove the colour layer. Contact us if you are unsure which finish your toy has.
Minor Repairs
Small, loose pieces that have come apart at a joint can sometimes be re-glued at home using a non-toxic, child-safe wood glue. Allow the glue to cure fully — and keep the toy away from children — until it is completely dry. Do not use superglue or solvent-based adhesives. If a part is broken rather than loose, or if the toy has a moving mechanism (such as a pulley, spinning rotor, or pull-along cord), please contact us before attempting a repair.
Non-Wood Elements
Some toys include canvas bags, fabric, wool, string, or cords. These can generally be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth and left to air-dry. Do not machine-wash or tumble-dry fabric components attached to wooden parts. Check cords and strings periodically for fraying, especially on pull-along toys, and contact us if a cord needs replacing.
Magnetic Tiles
Several of our learning boards and tile sets contain hidden magnets. Keep these away from electronic devices, bank cards, and other magnets. Do not attempt to open or remove the magnets. If a magnet becomes exposed or a tile is damaged, discontinue use and contact us.
Storage
Store wooden toys in a dry, indoor location away from humidity. Avoid plastic bags or airtight containers, which can trap moisture. Open baskets, wooden trays, or canvas bags (like those included with some sets) are ideal. If storing for a longer period, ensure the toy is completely clean and dry first.
When to Contact Us
Please get in touch if your toy has a broken structural part, an exposed or damaged magnet, a frayed or broken cord on a pull-along toy, or if you are unsure whether a repair is safe to attempt at home. We are happy to advise.
